Check out the reasons why Indore is known to be the cleanest city, and let's pledge to make the whole country clean.
For the past four years, Indore has been winning the title of the 'cleanest city in India', and there are several reasons for it. From focusing on the city's waste management to segregating waste, the city ensures hygiene for its people. Indore sets an example for the whole country to take responsibility for cleaning public spaces. In the hope to use this example all over India, we have brought here the factors for "why Indore is known to be the cleanest city of India".
1. Door-to-door garbage collection
Unlike now, in the past, the people of Indore were unaware of waste segregation. Oftentimes, they found it difficult to understand color-coded garbage bins. However, after realizing this, the Municipal Corporation of Indore adopted a 'bin less city' policy. Under this policy, garbage collectors started a door-to-door collection. Gradually, people also started segregating waste into organic and inorganic.
2. Installation of Bio-methanation plant
Installation of Bio-methanation plant is one of the main reasons why Indore is known to be the cleanest city. Choitram Mandi, a wholesale market of fruits and vegetables, generates a large amount of waste. After the installation of the Bio-CNG plant, it has become easier to process the waste in this plant. Also, the gas released from the Bio-CNG plant serves as a fuel for public buses of the city.
3. Garbage Transfer Stations
After segregation of waste by garbage collectors, previously, it was transported to the centralized processing plant. But the distance to the plant was nearly 20-23 km. Hence, to reduce time and costs, IMC built eight ultra-modern transfer stations at different locations in the city.
4. Car-dustbins, a hit
The officials also noticed that people driving cars throw waste out of their windows. In the absence of dustbins inside cars, people don't hesitate to litter roads and streets. Hence, the mayor of Indore came up with the idea of car-dustbins. The vehicle owners were distributed 1,200 car-dustbins to maintain cleanliness on the roads.
5. Efficient road cleaning service
The clean and beautiful roads of Indore are a result of the hard work of civic officials. After realizing that manually cleaning of roads is a difficult task, the IMC got the machines from an international company. After that, sweeping of roads of 450-500 Kms per day and night started. Gradually, residents of Indore started observing the roads that had become dust-free.
Night cleaning, the major contributor
A big credit for clean roads in Indore goes to "night cleaning" in the city. The sweeping of roads with the machines at night helps a lot in maintaining the cleanliness of the roads. The Indore Municipal Corporation officials believe that it is one of the major reasons why residents do not encounter garbage on the roads in the morning.
6. Maintenance of Community toilets
To make the city defecation-free, Indore Municipal Corporation built more than 700 public toilets along with 250 urinals. Also, to ensure cleanliness in the toilets, IMC installed instant feedback devices. After that, it became easier for citizens to record their complaints in case of poor hygiene. The civic body had also installed CCTVs outside for continuous monitoring of the toilets.
7. System of punishments and rewards
Indore Municipal Corporation has recently announced a system of punishments and rewards. Under this, the people who keep their surroundings clean are rewarded, and those who litter are condemned. Also, to motivate people for cleanliness, several hospitals and institutions organize competitions. And, those who use the most innovative idea for it, are rewarded.
