By securing 54 votes in the civic polls, Arya Rajendran became the youngest Mayor in the country.
After securing 54 votes in the 100-member Council in the election, twenty-one-year-old, Arya Rajendran, has become the youngest Mayor in the country. She was sworn in as the Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram city Corporation on Monday.
Arya is a second-year student of Bachelor's in Science in Thiruvananthapuram's All Saints College. Her name was suggested by the City's District Secretariat of the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) for the post.
Ms. Rajendran had taken oath as Councillor of the ruling party six days ago. She had won from the Mudavanmughal ward of the city corporation, obtaining 2,872 votes, 549 more than the Congress candidate.
Youngest Mayor in the country joined politics at six
Daughter of CPI(M) activist K Rajendran, an electrician by profession, and Sreelatha, a LIC agent, Arya is not new to politics. She had become a member of Bala Sangam, a children’s outfit affiliated to the party, at the age of six. Presently, she is state president of the outfit. She is also a committee member of the Students Federation of India (SFI), a youth wing of the party.
Ms. Rajendran wants to continue her studies along with working for the waste management system in the city as Mayor. Apart from this, she also wants to work to support and uplift women.
Before Arya Rajendran, BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis had become the Mayor of Nagpur Municipal Corporation at the age of 27..
