In order to ensure sanitation in Asia's largest slum where 80% of the people depend on public toilets, the civic body of Mumbai has planned to set up a Suvidha centre in Dharavi.
The Brihanmumhai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will open the two-storey centre to provide 111 toilets along with laundry services and water ATMs which are installed at community toilets.
Separate toilets for women at Suvidha centre in Dharavi
The centre will be established on a 2,600-square metre plot in the slum area. It will have 100 clean flushing toilet seats for women, men and children. Apart from this, there will also be toilets for people with disabilities.
The toilets will be designed with a separate entrance for women and girls. However, to reduce the risk of violence, some specific toilets will open at night for women.
Apart from providing facilities, the centre will also educate the residents on personal hygiene. It will aim to highlight the issues related to the lack of laundry facilities, safe drinking water, etc.
The centre is likely to open by October 2, 2021.
