Shampa Nandy, the Kolkata cab driver turned her car into a cab ambulance after realizing the malpractices done by ambulance drivers these days.
To prevent patients from the extortion by ambulance drivers prevalent these days, the Kolkata cab driver turned her car into a cab ambulance. She, now, ferries patients to hospitals and takes them back.
Shampa Nandy starts her duty from 10 am and continues ferrying patients till midnight. Even after facing opposition from her family, she is determined to help people.
Since COVID-19 patients are usually scared after contracting the disease, Shampa talks with them while driving them to the hospital.
The second wave led to the conversion of her car into a cab-ambulance
The Kolkata resident had learned driving in 2019 and after getting motivated by her sister to feed the family on her own, she had got her own cab in June last year.
However, only in the second wave, she joined Kolkata's Ola, Uber, App-Cab Operators’ and Drivers’ Union which offer the service.
Shampa is separated from her husband and lives with her 13-year-old daughter and mother-in-law in one room. She used to fear spreading the disease to them, as initially, she did not have a PPE kit. Now, she has a few sets with her which help her work with confidence throughout the day.
She feels life is worth living as she can help those in need.
Salute to the determination!
