'Voice of Slum' has distributed around 100 oxygen cylinders and concentrators at just Rs.1 to underprivileged COVID-19 patients at the doorstep in Delhi NCR.
The acute shortage of oxygen has caused many deaths. The situation in the last few months was so bad that even finding an oxygen cylinder was a big task. Seeing how people who can afford to buy oxygen were not able to find any, made team Voice of Slum realize how difficult would it be for the needy and people living in slums to avail themselves of the oxygen support. Taking a step to help such people, this Noida-based NGO started providing oxygen cylinders and concentrators at just Rs.1.
" During the second wave of COVID-19, a few members in our team was detected COVID positive. We have been distributing food and other essential items also, so some of our members were infected by the virus. After this we realized how other people must have been suffering and especially those who live in slums and can't afford oxygen cylinders.", says Anshuman Tyagi, member of VOS.
Their team decided to keep the price Rs.1 so that people don't mind procuring it from them. It's been one month since VOS is distributing cylinders in Delhi NCR. They have successfully provided 100 oxygen supplies as of now. " We don't have a daily target. Every day people reach out to us. We usually give it for 15 days and when the patient returns it we pass it on to others. We have increased our stock also but unfortunately, we are unable to help everyone.", says Anshuman.
Voice of Slums has covered multiple cities including Delhi, Haryana, Ghaziabad, and Noida. There are 10 people in their team constantly working and arranging cylinders along with their regular activities and campaigns of food distribution. They were also verifying leads during the start of the lockdown.
Talking about an incident that touched Anshuman, he says, " There was a kid at our NGO. Her mother became COVID positive last month, and could not survive. Her father is paralyzed too, and she has 3 siblings. We had arranged a shelter for her family and our team has been giving them food since then every day. It makes us happy."
Voice of Slum works for the upliftment of slum children. Under their campaign ‘Feed The Slum’, the NGO has served 18 lakh meals to the children. They have also helped migrant labourers moving towards their hometown, and have been providing kits containing glucose and water to protect these people from heat and keeping them hydrated.
