Kamaal Shaikh, the singer from West Bengal, had come to Pune five years ago but is now managing it hard to earn a livelihood due to the pandemic.
As Coronavirus and the followed lockdown disrupted many businesses, it also affected the livelihood of many artists. One such artist, Kamaal Shaikh, a singer from West Bengal is now forced to sing on the roadside in Pune.
Kamaal had shifted to Pune five years back from Murshidabad, a city in West Bengal. At that time, he used to earn nearly Rs. 20,000 monthly by singing at marriages, birthday parties, and other occasions. However, since the lockdown was imposed, it became hard for Kamaal to manage his earnings.
The 51-year-old, now, stands at a lane on Salunke Vihar road in Pune with his microphone and a small speaker singing the melodies of Kishore Kumar and Mohammed Rafi. Passers-by, after taking a notice of him, come but Kamaal receives a very less amount in a donation.
As he receives a maximum of Rs 100 to 150 after singing on demand, he is unable to send the money to his family is living in a village in Murshidabad. Although, Kamaal lives in Ashrafnagar like earlier as his landlord is kind to him and lets him stay.
Despite managing to make a living with difficulties, Kamaal takes out his mic and speaker to sing his heart out from 7 am every day.
