World Ozone Day: Take these simple steps to protect the ozone layer for a safe future for humankind!

On the occasion of World Ozone Day, here's a chance for you to understand the importance of preserving nature and take small steps to protect the ozone layer, the depletion of which can cause severe skin problems to humans.

There are a lot of things related to the environment that we do not give much attention to amid living a busy life. However, never should we forget that our irresponsible actions can harm the environment, which can, ultimately, also affect our lives. The ozone layer, which protects the earth from the ultraviolet sun rays, has been depleting for a very long time, and it's time for us to take simple yet necessary steps to protect the Ozone layer. Herein, we have tried to help you with how you can also contribute your bit while being at home.

1. A big no to harmful gases

One of the biggest contributors to the depletion of the ozone layer is the release of harmful gases in the atmosphere like CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), halogenated hydrocarbon, methyl bromide, and nitrous oxide in various processes. You might be surprised to know that even some makeup products contain CFCs. And, apart from that, one can avoid using room fresheners and hair sprays.

2. Cycle the way out

As difficult as it may seem, cycles have the potential to save the environment to a large extent, and a glimpse of the increasing usage of cycles was also visible during the initial days of the Coronavirus pandemic. The cars produce carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides that affect the ozone layer. While not having a car is not possible for most of us, one can reduce its consumption and go for alternatives in the form of cycles and other public transport.

3. Go local

There is no denying that going local is the solution to many problems. In a bid to save the ozone layer, you can start using local products that do not take longer distances to arrive. The very simple reason for this is more the distance for the products to travel, the more nitrous oxide is produced due to the medium used to transport that product.

4. An eye on ACs and refrigerators

We all tend to leave the ACs unrepaired even after knowing that it is malfunctioning when winters arrive. However, you must know, that such malfunctions help CFC to enter the atmosphere. The same goes for refrigerators too. So, the next time any of these are not working, do not forget to get these repaired immediately.

5. A change in cleaning materials

Most of the cleaning materials or the products that we use contain solvents and corrosive substances. So, the best way to avoid using them is by replacing them with non-toxic products such as vinegar or bicarbonate. After all, cleaning your house is also important!

6. Organic fertilisers, the need of the hour

The need of the hour is to use organic fertilizers than chemical ones, which often release many greenhouse gases. For your small gardens and green spaces thus, make sure to buy organic fertilizers that are available through various brands these days.

7. The eco-friendly way

To avoid being the reason for the depletion of the ozone layer, one can do their best by using products that do not come at the cost of the environment. Also, one must avoid packed food items and food with preservatives.

8. Reuse, Reduce and Recycle

Though this mantra is not new, it is one of the most important ways to save the environment from all odds. Always remember to reuse the items as much as possible and reduce the consumption of gases. Importantly, try to send the products for recycling to the nearby recycling centers.
