The popular Banjara market of Gurugram, which was existing for the past 15 years, has been demolished by the team of Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) after giving several notices to the shop owners.
The Banjara market of Gurugram was home to affordable furniture and home decor items for people living nearby sector 56 and from all over Delhi. This market was a must-visit for all the decor lovers and used to sell trendy pieces at affordable prices. However, now, the market has been demolished by the enforcement team of the Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP).
Around 250 makeshift shops and hutments spread over an area of 25 acres were destroyed on Tuesday after regular notices to clear the land were ignored by the shop owners. According to the officials, some people who turned out to be shop owners had illegally started their businesses 15 years ago and were not vacating the land despite several notices.
The local authorities, which included 150 men and 50 women police personnel started the demolition drive at 11 a.m. and continued till evening. While most of the shopkeepers had removed their wares from the shops, some had asked for a two-day time.
After the demolition drive, around 80% of the market has been cleared, including the entire service road and the main sector road, which was occupied by the shopkeepers. As per Satya Narain, subdivisional officer (survey), HSVP, the whole area will also be cleared soon.
The plot of the market is earmarked for the construction of a college, a bus stand, and group housing societies. Out of the whole plot, a part has also been allotted to the Income Tax department where official accommodations will be constructed.
