1. 100 Indian cities to have their own metro networks
The Union housing and urban affairs ministry has stated that in the 100th year of Independence, i.e., by 2047, almost 100 cities will have their own metro networks. India's metro is the fifth largest globally in the current times with the facilities operational in cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Jaipur, Gurugram, Noida, Lucknow, etc.
2. India to get its first vertical-lift bridge in March
The Pamban railway bridge, which is being constructed between Mandapam and Rameswaram, will be operational from March 2022. The first vertical-lift bridge will allow ships and steamers to pass through without any hindrance, and the trains will be able to move at higher speeds and carrying more weight.
3. Andhra Pradesh to provide free sanitary napkins to school-going kids
Under the 'Swechha' program, launched by Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, female students will be given sanitary napkins free of cost. According to the initiative, the government will provide ten sanitary napkins every month to about 10 lakh girls studying from Class 7 to 12 in all government schools and intermediate colleges. Also, a total of 120 napkins will be given to every female student per year.
4. Odisha to introduce a policy for transgender to stop discrimination
The Odisha government has initiated a special policy named, Equal Opportunity Policy for Transgender Persons. According to the scheme, the department will provide equal opportunities regardless of any criteria like sex, sexual orientation, marital status, etc. Moreover, a complaint officer will also be appointed by the state to work for the grievances of transgender persons and the early redressal.
5. Anganwadi workers and helpers on COVID-19 duty to get Rs 50 lakh insurance cover
The government has included Anganwadi workers and helpers in the health insurance scheme of COVID-19, according to which they will be provided with Rs. 50 Lakh insurance cover for working in such harsh situations. It will include the people who were involved in door-to-door ration distribution, awareness drives, community fever surveillance, etc.
