The last few years have been very fortunate for the Indian Chess industry with many wins on India's side. Most amazingly, even the kids and teenagers have been making the country proud by winning various international championships. Here in, we bring to your notice a few of the chess players in India who are taking the country to various national and international competitions.
1. Viswanathan Anand
Viswanathan Anand, the Indian chess grandmaster has been a five-time world chess champion. He was the first person to become the first grandmaster from India in 1988. He has also been awarded Padma Bhushan.
2. Vidit Gujrathi
Vidit Gujrathi has been the captain of Chess Olympiad 2020 and won the gold medal in the competition. Currently, he stands on world rank 21 and Indian rank 2. He obtained the title of Grandmaster in January 2013.
3. Srinath Narayanan
The chess grandmaster and coach, Srinath Narayanan has many feats on his name. He has been the vice-captain of the Indian Chess Olympiad team. Narayanan has also participated in U12 World Champ, 2005.
4. Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa
Taking the nation to the level of feats, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa has been winning hearts for the last two years. He got the international master title at the tender age of 10 while got the title of the grandmaster at 12 in 2018.
5. Pentala Harikrishna
The chess player Harikrishna became the youngest grandmaster from India on 11 September 2001 at the age of 14 until another player broke the record. He was also a champion in the Commonwealth Championship in 2001, World Junior Champion in 2004, and Asian Individual Champion in 2011.
6. Koneru Humpy
Koneru Humpy received immense popularity for winning the FIDE Women's rapid chess championship in 2019. In 2002, she also became the youngest woman ever at that time to achieve the title of Grandmaster at the age of 15 years!
7. Parimarjan Negi
The Indian chess grandmaster achieved the grandmaster title at the age of 13 years, 4 months, and 20 days in 2006. He was also granted the Arjuna Award in 2010 by the Indian Government.
8. Harika Dronavalli
Harika Dronavalli has also been the recipient of the FIDE title of Grandmaster. She has won three bronze medals in the Women's World Chess Championship, in the year 2012, 2015 and 2017. Dronavalli was also awarded the Arjuna Award for the years 2007–08 by the government of India.
