1. 71-year-old wins Silver medal at World Police and Fire Games
A 71-year-old retired police officer Dr. Kashmir Singh has made the country proud at World Police and Fire Games by winning a Silver medal in Golf. The event welcomes active and retired law enforcement and fire service personnel. Moreover, it is said to be the second largest competition in the world.
2. Election Commission allows 17-year-olds to apply for a voter's ID card
The Election Commission of India has announced that those aged 17 years can apply in advance for a voter's card by getting enrolled in the list and that they need not wait until the criterion of becoming 18 years. The electoral roll will be updated every quarter.
3. Tamil Nadu to organize the International Kite Festival
The Mamallapuram region of Chennai is looking forward to hosting the first edition of the Tamil Nadu International Kite Festival. It is going to be a three-day event that will begin on August 13 and will end on August 15.
4. Digital libraries in Kodagu introduces various games for rural kids
The digital libraries that are introduced in all schools across the district will also be used for making children play games like Chess and other board games. The Karnataka Government has issued a notice to introduce these games to the students. During the library hour, the kids can play these games.
5. 'Bharatiya Games' to be introduced in schools
Some of the Indian games like 'Raja Mantri Chor Sipahi', 'Gilli Danda', 'Yubi Lakpa', and 'Kabbadi' are amongst the 75 games that are soon to be introduced in schools. The centre has announced its inclusion under the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) initiative by the education ministry.
6. Bengaluru becomes the first city in India to collaborate with Google for traffic management
This is the first time in the nation that a police department of a city will directly work with Google. Bengaluru, as announced by the Joint Commissioner, is going to work with the company for traffic management. The aim is to reduce the traffic congestion in the city.
7. Private firms of liquor outlets to be closed from August 1
According to the new excise policy that came into effect in November 2021, private firms were allowed to start retail liquor outlets. However, with the old excise regime coming into effect, the 468 liquor outlets will be closed from August 1. As of now, the licensed individuals selling alcohol are 389 in the nation's capital.
8. Citizens to reach the Kempegowda airport in just Rs. 35
In good news for the citizens of Bengaluru, travelling to the airport will now be possible for just Rs. 35. The South Western Railway has announced 5 MEMU Express trains that will be connected to the airport and will fall under the special services category. The cost of the train ride will range from Rs 30 to Rs 35.
9. Black Tiger spotted in Similipal National Park in Odisha
According to a video clip posted by an officer from Indian Forest Service, a Black tiger can be seen marking a territory while also leaving scratch marks on a tree. The scene is from the Similipal National Park in Odisha. The black tiger is a different coloured animal from the usual orange tiger species.
