1. Varanasi nominated as the first SCO tourism and cultural capital
The cultural city, Varanasi has been nominated as the first-ever SCO Tourism and Cultural capital at the 22nd meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). The move is likely to boost tourism and cultural exchanges between India and the SCO member countries.
2. Delhi bans firecrackers till January 1
Delhi government has banned all kinds of firecrackers and has asked the residents of the national capital to take responsibility for pollution in the city. The government has imposed a complete ban, including the production, sale, and use of all types of firecrackers and green crackers till January 1, 2023.
3. India takes 'Trees outside forests in India' initiative
India has planned to expand 28 hectares of tree coverage under the initiative - 'Trees outside forests in India' initiative led by the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry. The move has been taken to also increase tree-based livelihoods and build climate-resilient agriculture.
4. Bajrang Punia wins his 4th medal at World Wrestling Championship
Wrestler Bajrang Punia has become the first Indian to win four medals at World Wrestling Championship as he claimed Bronze in the last match. He defeated Vazgen Tevanyan of Armenia - 7-6 by points. On the other hand, Punia had already won bronze in 2013, silver in 2018, and bronze in 2019 before this.
5. India launched an annual cleanliness programme in rural India
The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation has launched a fortnightly ‘Swachhta Hi Sewa' (SHS) to speed up the efforts to achieve complete sanitation in rural India. As part of this campaign, the states have been requested to organize activities that involve the masses.
6. Srinagar's first multiplex to open this month
Srinagar is set to get its first multiplex, about to be opened on September 20. The Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha will inaugurate the multiplex, after which the Amir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer 'Laal Singh Chaddha' will be released as the first film.
