These homegrown biofuel startups are turning plastic, and seaweeds, into biofuels that are eco-friendly and even biodegradable in some cases.
Made from biomass, such as animal waste, algae, or plant material, biofuels are considered sources of renewable energy. They burn cleanly, causing less damage to the environment, and provide a promising alternative to fossil fuels, which are not only exhaustible but also unsustainable. Biofuels can contribute to the fight against global warming and help create a cleaner environment, which is why they should be produced on a larger scale. Here's a list of biofuel startups that are working towards this goal. Take a look, as they are producing biofuel from waste!
1. Eco Green Recycling
This Mathura-based startup is converting LLDPE and HIPS, which are single-use plastics that can't be easily recycled, into biofuel. Through a process called Pyrolysis, which involves breaking down molecules using thermal degradation without oxygen, Eco Green Recycling produces oil.
2. Uranus Renewable Pvt Ltd
Uranus Renewable Pvt Ltd, using used cooking oil, successfully converted around 3 tonnes of cooking oil collected from its family-owned company, Pan Oleo Energy, into 70,000 liters of biodiesel in 2022. This biodiesel was then utilized by vehicles and buses operating in quarries and construction sites.

3. Aganvay Technologies
This startup provides economical and ecological solutions for the Energy and Chemical industry. It has developed Torrefaction technology, that can utilize agricultural residues like sugarcane bagasse and wheat and rice stubble for producing electricity and fuels like bio-methanol.
4. Greenjoules
Greenjoules makes drop-in biofuels (hydrocarbon biofuels) with agro waste and is replacing high-speed diesel and claims doesn't create any hazardous wastes. The produced biofuel can use in any machinery without modifications as well as a soil amendment after treatment with biofertilizers like compost.
5. GFF Innovations
GFF Innovations is a Chandigarh-based startup that uses crop stubble and turns them into biofuels. A machine called Moksh was developed by the team that automatically picks up the stubble waste and turns them into a powdery solution after being mounted on a tractor. This powder is then used as an alternative fuel by boilers and brick kilns as a binding agent for producing bricks and fibreboards.
6. Sea6 Energy
This one is converting biomass (renewable organic material that comes from plants and animals) into biofuel as well as bio-renewable products, and plant stimulants, and replacing plastics and chemicals with them. They recently even bagged an investment of $9 million in funding from a Netherland-based company, Aqua-Spark, for their innovation that turns seaweed into sustainable products for different industries such as agriculture and animal health.
7. GPS Renewables
This clean fuel startup works towards the production and distribution of green fuels like Biogas, BioCNG, Ethanol, and Green Hydrogen and had recently manufactured an EV charging point in Mumbai that uses fuel made from the waste-driven biogas. This startup is also actively involved in urban waste processing and has deployed over 100 Biogas and BioCNG infrastructures globally.
