#LocalWaliDiwali

Local Samosa’s #LocalWaliDiwali series puts a spotlight on India’s rich heritage of arts, crafts, and handicrafts, along with the local mom-and-pop stores that have been serving their communities for generations. This initiative celebrates the perfect blend of tradition and innovation, focusing on the most promising local stores that are at the heart of their cities, known for reviving traditional Indian crafts across various categories.

This Diwali, through this series, we are committed to showcasing the best local artists, craftsmen, and small businesses that preserve Indian heritage through their products. By putting these gems on the map, we aim to connect them with people beyond their city, giving these local businesses the visibility, boost, and clientele they deserve.

Historical Roots and Craftsmanship of Khun Sarees

Khun Sarees

Khun sarees trace their origins to the 8th century during the Chalukya Dynasty in Karnataka, initially used as offerings in Guledgudda village. Over time, they have become cherished garments, especially among women in Maharashtra and North Karnataka.

The craftsmanship behind Khun sarees is a meticulous process that can take up to 15 days to weave 200 metres of fabric. This involves dyeing cotton and silk yarns before weaving them using various techniques like ground warp and extra warp. Characterised by jewel tones and intricate motifs, the unique handloom weave adds to their charm. Similar to Banarasi fabric, Khun is a lightweight brocade adorned with intricate motifs. While traditionally worn by women in rural markets, there is a potential for Khun to reach urban audiences.

Distinguished by striking designs and borders, the sarees often feature vibrant pallu patterns and received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2016, recognising their cultural significance.

The Modern Revival: Khun Cushion Covers

Khun Cushion Covers

As the festive season begins, there is growing interest in the contemporary use of Khun fabric, a traditional textile, as women flock to markets in search of new sarees for puja celebrations. The question arises whether modern Indian women will choose sarees or opt for contemporary drapes while remaining connected to their cultural roots. Historically, Khun fabric was primarily woven for crafting sari blouses that paired seamlessly with Ilkal sarees.

In today's evolving fashion landscape, the revival of textiles is gaining momentum, with millennials becoming more discerning about their shopping choices. The current collection features not only sarees but also home decor items like cushion covers along with kurta sets, anarkalis, skirts, and tops. And the way this heritage craft is reaching homes is with cushion covers that elevate your home decor. This Diwali, swap your old cushion and pillow covers for Khun ones that hold history and charm that continues to add spice to your homes!
