On Sunday, June 9, India witnessed the swearing-in ceremony of the Narendra Modi led government. Here’s a list of all the Cabinet Ministers for the Union who have taken office in 2024.

As soon as the Lok Sabha election results were announced, the buzz about the Union Cabinet and who would take up which ministry started immediately. On Sunday, June 9, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was sworn into office along with his long line of ministers. The interesting part was watching BJP party president J.P. Nadda and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan join the Cabinet. Here’s the list of the incoming Council of Ministers and their respective portfolios for the Union Cabinet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi

  • Ministry of Personnel Public Grievances and Pensions: The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions is the coordinating agency of the Central Government in personnel matters specially issues concerning recruitment, training, career development, and staff welfare as well as the post-retirement dispensation. The Ministry is also concerned with the process of responsive people-oriented modern administration.
  • Department Of Atomic Energy: DAE encompasses all the areas related to power and non-power applications of atomic energy.
  • Department of Space: The Department of Space is responsible for the administration of the Indian space programme. It manages several agencies and institutes related to space exploration and space technologies.

  • Ministry of Defence: The Government of India is responsible for ensuring the defence of India and every part thereof. The Supreme Command of the Armed Forces vests in the President. The responsibility for national defence rests with the Cabinet.

Amit Shah

  • Ministry of Home Affairs: The Ministry of Home Affairs, or simply the Home Ministry, is mainly responsible for the maintenance of internal security and domestic policy.
  • Ministry of Cooperation: The Ministry of Cooperation is a Union ministry under the Government of India that was formed in 2021. The ministry provides a separate administrative, legal, and policy framework for strengthening the cooperative movement in the country. 

Nitin Gadkari

  • Ministry of Road Transport and Highways: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is a ministry of the Government of India, that is the apex body for formulation and administration of the rules, regulations and laws relating to road transport, transport research and also to increase the mobility and efficiency of the road transport system in India.

J.P. Nadda

  • Ministry of Health and Family Welfare: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, also known by its abbreviation MoHFW, is an Indian government ministry charged with health policy in India. It is also responsible for all government programs relating to family planning in India.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan

  • Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare: The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, formerly the Ministry of Agriculture, is the apex body for the formulation and administration of the rules, regulations and laws related to agriculture in India.
  • Ministry of Rural Development: The Ministry of Rural Development is entrusted with the task of accelerating the socio-economic development of rural India.

Nirmala Sitharaman

  • Ministry of Finance: The Ministry of Finance is concerned with the economy of India, serving as the Treasury of India. In particular, it concerns itself with taxation, financial legislation, financial institutions, capital markets, centre and state finances, and the Union Budget.
  • Ministry of Corporate Affairs: The Ministry of Corporate Affairs is primarily concerned with the administration of the Companies Act 2013, the Companies Act 1956, the Limited Liability Partnership Act, 2008, and the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016.

  • Ministry of External Affairs: The Ministry of External Affairs of India is the government agency responsible for implementing Indian foreign policy.

Manohar Lal Khattar

  • Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has executive authority over the formulation and administration of the rules, regulations and laws relating to housing and urban development in India.
  • Ministry of Power: This ministry is charged with overseeing electricity production and infrastructure development, including generation, transmission, and delivery, as well as maintenance projects.

H.D. Kumaraswamy

  • Ministry of Heavy Industries: This ministry entails promoting the engineering industry namely machine tools, heavy electrical, industrial machinery, and auto industry and administration of 40 operating Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) and 4 autonomous organisations.
  • Ministry of Steel: The Ministry of Steel is responsible for formulating all policies regarding steel production, distribution and pricing in India.

Piyush Goyal

  • Ministry of Commerce and Industry: The Ministry of Commerce and Industry administers two departments, the Department of Commerce and the Department for Promotion of Industry & Internal Trade.

Dharmendra Pradhan

  • Ministry of Education: The Ministry of Education (MoE) is a ministry of the Government of India, responsible for the implementation of the National Policy on Education. The ministry is further divided into two departments: the Department of School Education and Literacy, which deals with primary, secondary and higher secondary education, adult education and literacy, and the Department of Higher Education, which deals with university-level education, technical education, scholarships and more.

Jitan Ram Manjhi

  • Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises: This ministry is the apex executive body for the formulation and administration of rules, regulations, and laws relating to micro, small and medium enterprises in India.

Rajiv Ranjan Singh

  • Ministry of Panchayati Raj: This ministry looks into all matters relating to the Panchayati Raj and Panchayati Raj Institutions. It was created in May 2004. 
  • Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying: The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying is a ministry of the Government of India that is responsible for the matters related to fisheries, animal husbandry and dairying. The ministry came into existence on 31 May 2019 after the formation of the Second Modi ministry.

Sarbananda Sonowal

  • Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways: The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is the Indian ministry responsible for the formulation and administration of the rules, regulations, and laws relating to ports, shipping and waterways. 

Veerendra Kumar

  • Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment: This ministry is responsible for welfare, social justice and empowerment of disadvantaged and marginalised sections of society, including scheduled castes (SC), Other Backward Classes (OBC), LGBT people, the disabled, the elderly, and the victims of drug abuse. It also helps in the enforcement of legislation with regard to these marginalised groups to better enforce anti-discrimination policies.

Ram Mohan Naidu

  • Ministry of Civil Aviation: The Ministry of Civil Aviation in India is the nodal ministry responsible for the formulation of national policies and programmes for the development and regulation of civil aviation. It devises and implements schemes for the orderly growth and expansion of civil air transport in the country.

  • Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution: The ministry is divided into two departments, the Department of Food and Public Distribution and the Department of Consumer Affairs. The objectives of the department are to ensure remunerative rates for the farmers and supply of food grains at reasonable prices through the public distribution system.
  • Ministry of New and Renewable Energy: The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is mainly responsible for research and development, intellectual property protection, and international cooperation, promotion, and coordination in renewable energy sources such as wind power, small hydro, biogas, and solar power.

Jual Oram

  • Ministry of Tribal Affairs: The Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MOTA) is charged with overall development of Scheduled Tribe communities of India by providing them education, scholarships, grants to create more health infrastructure in tribal communities, preservation of tribal culture and languages and direct cash transfer schemes to economically backward tribal families.

Giriraj Singh

  • Ministry of Textiles: This national agency responsible for the formulation of policy, planning, development, export promotion and regulation of the textile industry in India.

Ashwini Vaishnaw

  • Ministry of Railways: The Ministry of Railways is responsible for the country's rail transport. Indian Railways is a statutory body managed by the railway board under the ownership of the ministry that operates the national railway system.
  • Ministry of Information and Broadcasting: This ministry is responsible for the formulation and administration of rules, regulations and laws in the areas of information, broadcasting, the press and the cinema of India.
  • Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology: This ministry was carved out of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology on 19 July 2016 as a standalone ministerial agency responsible for IT policy, strategy and development of the electronics industry.

Jyotiraditya Scindia

  • Ministry of Communications: This ministry is responsible for telecommunications and postal service. It was carved out of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology on 19 July 2016.
  • Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region: The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region is a Government of India ministry, established in September 2001, which functions as the nodal Department of the Central Government to deal with matters related to the socio-economic development of the eight States of Northeast India: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim. It acts as a facilitator between the Central Ministries/ Departments and the State Governments of the North Eastern Region in the economic development including removal of infrastructural bottlenecks, provision of basic minimum services, creating an environment for private investment and to remove impediments to lasting peace and security in the North Eastern Region.

  • Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change: The ministry is responsible for planning, promoting, coordinating, and overseeing the implementation of environmental and forestry programmes in the country. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change is the cadre controlling authority of the Indian Forest Service (IFS).

Gajendra Shekhawat

  • Ministry of Culture: The Ministry of Culture is the Indian government ministry charged with the preservation and promotion of the art and culture of India.
  • Ministry of Tourism: The Ministry of Tourism is the apex body for the formulation and administration of the rules, regulations, and laws relating to the development and promotion of tourism in India. It facilitates the Indian Department of tourism. 

Annapurna Devi

  • Ministry of Women and Child Development: This ministry is an apex body for the formulation and administration of the rules, regulations and laws relating to women and child development in India.

Kiren Rijiju

  • Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs: The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs handles affairs relating to the Parliament of India, and works as a link between the two chambers, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
  • Ministry of Minority Affairs: The Ministry of Minority Affairs was carved out of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and created on 29 January 2006. It is the apex body for the central government's regulatory and developmental programmes for the minority religious communities and minority linguistic communities in India, which include Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Zoroastrians (Parsis) and Jains notified as minority religious communities in The Gazette of India under Section 2(c) of the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992.

Hardeep Singh Puri

  • Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas: The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is responsible for the exploration, production, refining, distribution, marketing, import, export, and conservation of petroleum, natural gas, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas in the country. 

Mansukh L. Mandaviya

  • Ministry of Labour and Employment: One of the oldest and most important ministries of the Government of India, this ministry is responsible for the enforcement of labour laws in general and legislation related to a worker's social security.
  • Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports: This ministry administers the Department of Youth Affairs and the Department of Sports in India. It also gives the annual National Youth Awards, and National Sports awards in various categories, including the Arjuna Award and Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna awards.

Kishan Reddy

  • Ministry of Coal: The Ministry of Coal is charged with the exploration of coal and lignite reserves in India, production, supply, distribution and price of coal through the government-owned corporation Coal India Limited and its subsidiaries and Neyveli Lignite Corporation.
  • Ministry of Mines: This ministry functions as the primary body for the formulation and administration of laws relating to mines in India.

Chirag Paswan

  • Ministry of Food Processing Industries: The Ministry of Food Processing Industries is a ministry of the Government of India responsible for the formulation and administration of the rules, regulations, and laws related to food processing in India.

C.R. Patil

  • Ministry of Jal Shakti: The Ministry of Jal Shakti was formed in May 2019 under the second Modi ministry. This was formed by merging two ministries; Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation and Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation.
