IMD issues red alert for Northeastern states for the next two days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for several northeastern states, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall over the next two days. As the monsoon has already kicked in, heavy rainfall is expected in the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim and sub-Himalayan West Bengal. According to ET, Naresh Kumar, an IMD scientist stated, "We have issued red alert for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim for today and for 2 days for Arunachal Pradesh."

Tata Trust no longer backs Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS)

Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), India's largest charitable trust founded under the direction of Tata Trusts in 1936 will no longer get its backing. The trust, which is well-known for its social science academic brilliance, is about to lose financial support from Tata Trusts as a result of recent governance reorganizations and legal changes. TISS was placed under the Union Education Ministry's purview earlier this year. Sources from Tata Trusts claimed that they will only be part of social projects, where it will have a say, and not where it does not have any form of representation.

Maharashtra gets its first woman Chief Secretary, Sujata Saunik

On Sunday, June 30, IAS Sujata Saunik became the first woman Chief Secretary of Maharashtra. She took over the charge from Chief Secretary Nitin Kareer. The 1987 batch IAS officer has handled other departments like the additional Chief Secretary of Skill Development, Employment and Entrepreneurship Department and Principal Secretary of Public Health and Financial Reform at the state level before taking this position. Earlier this year, senior IPS officer Rashmi Shukla took charge as Maharashtra Director General of Police (DGP). She was also the first woman in the state to occupy the post.

Chadwick House in Shimla gets a makeover as the CAG museum

Comptroller and Auditor General of India Girish Chandra Murmu inaugurated the 'Chadwick House Navigating Audit Heritage' Museum. The museum showcases the evolution, achievements, and milestones of the institution of CAG. The Chadwick House is a significant landmark in Shimla which is known for Mahatma Gandhi's stay in 1946 during his visit to Shimla for the Cabinet Mission

India’s liquor brand Amrut wins ‘World’s Best Whiskey’ award at the International Spirits Challenge

Amrut Whiskey from the house of Amrut Distillery, based in Bengaluru, has achieved international recognition by winning the “World’s Best Whiskey” title at the 2024 International Spirits Challenge in London. They stood out by securing five gold medals in the competitive “World Whisky Category.” This was the 29th edition of the Challenge which features top whiskey brands worldwide. 

Indian women's cricket team sets record for most runs in a day in test cricket history

India women's cricket team set a new record on the first day of their one-off test against South Africa, scoring 525 runs for four wickets. This is the highest total any team has scored in a single day of Women's test cricket. In the very same session, Indian batter Shafali Verma also broke the record of the fastest double century, previously smashed by Annabel Sutherland of Australia. Verma scored the double ton in just 194 balls, while Sutherland took 248 balls. Partnering with her was Smriti Mandhana, who contributed a brilliant 149 off 161 balls.

A massive avalanche struck Gandhi Sarovar near Kedarnath

The Gandhi Sarovar near Kedarnath was hit by a giant avalanche on Sunday, June 30. The video which went viral online shows the occurrence of the avalanche behind the Kedarnath temple in Uttarakhand. Reportedly, no casualties took place after the incident.
